Why don't serial to PS2 adapters work?
These adapters only change the plug of the PS2 mouse to plug into the serial port. It doesn't actually program the mouse to interface with your serial port. (For analogy its like you take an ordinary DVD and expect it to work in your CD player. Yes, it's going to fit in your CD player but it won't be able to read the DVD because that's not what it's setup for.)
